Arak is a distilled alcoholic drink that has been popular in Lebanon for a long time.
It is made by distilling grapes and flavoring them with aniseed, and is more indispensable on the daily dining table than wine in Lebanon.
The juice of white grapes is left to sit for about a week before being distilled, and anise is added and distilled several times.
After that, when the alcohol content reaches about 30%, it is bottled in a jar and aged for 1-2 years.
Arak is also known as "lion's milk" because it turns cloudy white when water is added.
There is also a theory that the roots of Japanese shochu lie in Lebanese arak.
It is said that it was introduced through Nagasaki during the Edo period, and shochu was called "araki sake" at the time.
[How to drink it the authentic Lebanese way]
1. Pour about 1/3 of the glass with kusarak.
2. Add an equal amount of water and the arak will turn cloudy white.
3. Finally, add ice and pour the glass right up to the rim.
The Lebanese style is to enjoy it little by little with your meal.
The winery "Clos Saint-Thomas" is now known for its many international award-winning wines, but it is a historic winery that originally started out producing arak.
In Lebanon, the name is so well known that "Touma (=Thoma) is synonymous with arak."
Please also take note of the unique bottle shape modeled after a mosque and the detailed label design.
It also makes a great gift.
